Deion Sanders Remains in Texas Amid Undisclosed Health Issue; Return to Colorado Uncertain

Colorado head football coach Deion Sanders is currently at his home in Texas, recovering from an undisclosed health condition, according to multiple reports, including ESPN and USA Today.

The 57-year-old Hall of Famer has been absent from Colorado's campus during the start of the program’s summer football camps. His eldest son, Deion Sanders Jr., shared an update during a YouTube livestream, assuring fans that his father is “feeling well,” though no timeline has been provided for his return to Boulder.

“He’ll eventually share what he’s going through,” Sanders Jr. said. “As for when we’ll be back in Boulder—I don’t know. I’m staying here until he leaves. I’m just here with him for now.”

The Buffaloes are set to open their 2025 season on August 29 at home against Georgia Tech, but it remains unclear whether Sanders, known widely as "Coach Prime," will be on the sideline.

Sanders, who guided Colorado to a 9–4 (7–2 Big 12) record in his second year, saw two key players—his son and quarterback Shedeur Sanders and Heisman Trophy winner Travis Hunter—enter the 2025 NFL Draft, marking a major transition for the team.

Health concerns are not new for Sanders. In 2022, he underwent surgery that resulted in the amputation of two toes due to complications from blood clots. He also missed the Pac-12 Media Day in 2023 because of similar issues. Most recently, he had to cancel a scheduled appearance at a medical conference in Florida hosted by the Foundation for Sickle Cell Disease Research.

The foundation posted on X (formerly Twitter):
“Due to an unavoidable last-minute scheduling change, our originally scheduled Foundation Keynote Speaker, Deion Sanders 'Coach Prime,' is unable to attend. We are grateful for his support and look forward to future opportunities to welcome him.”

As fans await more information, Sanders’ health remains the top concern for both the program and the broader college football community.
